Capoeira North West
A great way to get fit – but make it art – Capoeira combines self-defence, acrobatics, dance, music and song.
Dating back to the 1500s, following the enslavement of Africans by Portuguese migrants in Brazil, Capoeira was developed by slaves who used its exciting and dynamic movements to disguise the fact that they were practising fight moves.
Practised in a circle called a ‘roda’, don’t be put off joining a Capoeira class because you’re not a natural gymnast or acrobat. Beginners aren’t expected to do cartwheels and handstands – not straight away, at least – but are encouraged to build fitness slowly. And who knows? After a few months of training, you might be surprised what you can do. With classes available to suit all ages and abilities, head down to Capoeira North West on Blundell Street to learn the art of your own movements.
